BUFFALO – In what has become a recurring theme this fall, St. Bonaventure sophomore Clay Peets re-wrote the program record book to show the way for the men's cross country team at the Canisius Alumni Classic in Delaware Park Saturday afternoon.
Peets ran an 8K mark of 25:21.1 to break his own school record by just under two seconds.
The Bonnies have competed in four meets this fall and Peets has set a school record in each one. In the season-opening 5K race, he ran a time of 15:16.3 to sit atop the Bonnies record book. In the three 8K races since, he's been breaking his own marks time and again – first 25:26.2 in Rochester Sept. 24, then a time of 25:23.0 in Geneseo two weeks ago before Saturday's new record time.
The Ohio native placed 12th out of over 170 competitors in the race outside Buffalo, setting a new record despite some less-than-ideal weather conditions including morning rain and a cold wind.Â
As a team, the Bonnies took fifth overall out of 12 collegiate squads competing. Buffalo won the team title with 27 points, ahead of Duquesne (87) and host Canisius (98). The Bonnies registered 156 total team points.
Junior Zane Courtwright continued his recent surge, finishing second on the team and 33rd overall with his run of 26:14.9, just off his PR of 26:08 set in the Geneseo meet Oct. 1 which is tied for fourth individually in school history.
Senior Darion Gregory continued to better his own personal bests as well.
The fourth-year Bona's runner put up a time of 26:29.6 to eclipse his previous PR of 26:31.3 set two weeks ago. He continues to stand ninth overall in the Bonnies record books, but with a quicker mark than previously.
Two more underclassmen rounded out the team's scoring as freshman Aiden Scattergood continued his impressive season with a time of 26:41.1. Sophomore Colin McCarthy was next for the team at 27:11.4.
The Bonnies top-seven also included freshmen Ethan Luce, who PR'ed at 27:15.2, as well as Alex Ryan (27:35.1).
The Bonnies wrap their fall season in two weeks at the Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championship Saturday, Oct. 29 in Mechanicville, Va.
