BUFFALO – Bona's impressive freshmen continued their strong first-year cross country campaigns as the first four finishers for the Bonnies Saturday afternoon in the Canisius Alumni Classic are in their initial collegiate seasons. St. Bonaventure finished sixth as a team in the meet.
Fifteen teams made up Saturday's race with Duquesne taking the team championship with 21 points. Canisius (75), Buffalo (109), Daemen (133), Roberts Wesleyan (139) and St. Bonaventure (140) took the next five spots.
The fast times were more impressive considering the poor weather during the women's race. The race was held at Delaware Park under rainy and windy conditions, but the Bonnies made a dent in the history books regardless.
Jenna Gregory and Claire Cuneo each set personal bests with marks that jump up the Bonnies all-time individual record board.
Gregory, a two-time Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, beat her previous PR by nearly six full seconds as she crossed the stripe in 18:51.6. That performance moves her to fourth individually in program history, up two spots from her previous best set in the season-opening Little Three Championship.
Cuneo was right behind, finishing in 18:55.5. That time will move Cuneo to seventh on the Bonnies record board.
Gregory and Cuneo finished 13th and 14th overall out of 156 competitors in Saturday's race.
Bona's youth movement continued with freshmen Mia Winters (19:23.7) and Molly Gipson (19:45.7) taking the next two positions in the team running order.
Senior Lindsey Clawson gave the Bonnies a veteran presence in their scoring, finishing her run in 19:56.9. Juniors Lauren McGee (20:07.7) and Emily Peterson (20:16.5) completed the team's top-seven.
The Bonnies wrap their fall season in two weeks at the Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championship Saturday, Oct. 29 in Mechanicville, Va.
