ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Freshmen Colin McCarthy, Zach Buckner and Zane Courtwright set St. Bonaventure men's track program records to highlight an evening of strong times for the Bonnies at RIT Friday.
McCarthy bested the previous program best in the 5000 by 13 seconds, a mark which was set during the program's return to indoor competition two years ago, when he crossed the finish line in 16:00.41. The first-year Bonnie placed second overall in the event, besting 25 other runners and finishing behind only Eion McClain of Oneonta (15:47.19).
Another Bona's freshman earned a program record time as Buckner ran a time of 2:02.36 in the 800. Buckner was nearly three seconds better than the previous top time set by Elias Kott two seasons ago. Buckner registered a podium finish, placing third out of 40 competitors as he finished behind only James Gallagher of Hamilton (2:00.11) and Richard Moore of Canisius (2:02.05).
Courtwright posted another program-best in the 1000 meters as he crossed the stripe in 2:38.66. Teammate Kieran Ryan was right behind at 2:39.52 and the Bona's duo came home second and third respectively Friday night in the 1K race, just behind race-winner Turner Dirrigl of Canisius (2:37.96).Â
Buckner was strong in the mile as well, clocking in at 4:34.29, second-best in the program indoor record books, and the best Bonnies time this year by 10 seconds. Darion Gregory also ran a PR at 4:41.73, good for third in the young program record book, while Wyatt Hulsey (4:43.60), James Fitzmaurice (4:46.97) and Hayden Barry (4:51.34) logged personal bests in the event, too.
At the 3000-meter race, Thomas Dachik showed the way with an effort of 9:42.5, fourth-best overall for the Bonnies.
Additionally, multiple Bonnies qualified for the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships later this month: McCarthy in the 5K, Buckner in the 800 as well as Courtwright and Ryan in the 1000.
The Bonnies are back in competition next Saturday at the Cornell Indoor Invite.
