GENESEO, N.Y. – Freshman Zach Buckner broke an over three decades old school record in the 5000 meters to highlight the first outdoor meet of the season for the St. Bonaventure men's track team at the Geneseo Early Season Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Buckner finished third overall out of 41 runners, finishing in a time of 15:09.60. That mark shattered the old top Bona time of 15:47 set in 1988 by Jim Mahar. For Buckner, Saturday represented his first career outdoor collegiate meet.
Fellow freshman Clay Peets ran the sixth-fastest individual time in school history for the 5k as well, finishing 14th overall at 15:57.37.
A pair of top-10 individual school times were logged in the 1500 meters as well.
Darion Gregory moved into sixth in the Bonnies record books with his run of 4:12.95 while Wyatt Hulsey turned in the eighth-place time in Bona history for the event as he crossed the finish line in 4:17.92. Gregory also ran the eighth-best individual time in the program record books in the 800 with another PR mark of 2:04.46.
Freshman Colin McCarthy gave the Bonnies another top-10 school time in the 10,000 meters as he moves into fourth at 33:47.43.
Both Buckner and Peets qualified for the Atlantic 10 Championships in the 5000 meters while Zane Courtwright also qualified for the conference meet in the 800 after his time of 2:01.67. Courtwright qualified for A-10s in the 1500 as well, running a mark of 4:07.71.
The Bonnies are back in action next Saturday at the University at Buffalo.
