ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Sophomore Clay Peets established a new St. Bonaventure men's cross country 5K program record to lead the way for a Bonnies' second-place finish at Saturday's Little Three Championship run on the McGraw-Jennings field complex.
Peets took advantage of a fast course on a warm, sunny morning as he finished the race in a time of 15:16.3. He easily established the new Bonnies record time, besting the mark of 15:40 set on the home course in 2020 by Darion Gregory. Peets' previous 5K best came in last year's running of the event between Little Three rivals Bona's, Canisius and Niagara when he clocked in at 15:42.79 on the course at Fort Niagara State Park.
Canisius captured the team crown with 21 team points, ahead of Bonaventure with 40. Niagara finished with 82.
Peets finished second out of the 43 competitors behind only Tom Appenheimer of Canisius who took individual honors at 15:06.4. Both runners broke the five-minute mile pace with Peets at 4:55.
Gregory was second on the team and fifth overall as he came home at 16:01.3 to start his senior campaign. On the other end of the career spectrum was another top-10 Bona's finsher as freshman Aiden Scattergood rounded out the top 10 finishers in his first collegiate meet as he clocked in at 16:16.7.
Scattergood began a run of three straight Bonnies underclassmen as he was followed at the finish line by fellow freshman Alex Ryan who timed in at 16:19.5 as well as sophomore Colin McCarthy with an effort of 16:21.3. Scattergood's time slots eighth in program history for individuals while Ryan moves into 10th in the program's top-10 5K marks.
Youth prevailed through the rest of the team's top-seven: freshman Christian Figueroa (16:39.1) and sophomore Thomas Dachik (16:50.2) wrapped the scoring for the hosts.
The Bonnies next run at the Anderson Invitational hosted by Roberts Wesleyan in Rochester Sept. 24.
