Box Score RICHMOND, Va. — A second half surge from host Richmond proved too much for the St. Bonaventure women's soccer team as they fell 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Despite a 1-0 lead after the first half, the Bonnies couldn't hold on, conceding two second half goals to the Spiders on a sunny afternoon in Virginia.
Sophomore
Olivia Allen netted her third penalty kick of the year to put St. Bonaventure on top in the 30
th minute.
Graduate student
Amber Achladis was taken down as she made a run towards the ball on the right side of the box to draw the penalty. Allen converted and is now a perfect 3-for-3 on penalty kicks this year and has four goals and 12 points on the season.
The Bonnies (3-4-5, 2-2-1 A-10) had a scare from the Spiders in the closing minutes of the opening frame as
Bridget Kennedy was cautioned, giving Richmond a free kick. The Spiders seemed to score off the set piece, but the goal was called off as the flag was up for an offsides call.
The Bonnies took the 1-0 lead into the intermission while leading in total shots (8-5) and shots on goal (4-3). Junior goalkeeper
Chiara Gottinger collected all three first half shots from the Spiders easily.
The second half saw Richmond (3-7-3, 1-4-0 A-10) capitalize on set pieces as both their goals were from free kicks just barely outside the 18-yard box.
In the 62
nd minute, Molly Weirman sent a free kick shot just over the hands of a leaping Gottinger to square the match at one. Emma Shields drew the foul for the Spiders that led to the goal.
Again, Richmond was able to convert on a set piece in the 67
th minute. This time the free kick was deflect out to the top of the box and a shot that was initially saved by Gottinger found Hannah Antonick's head who put the goal away.
Ami Komori and Allen both took shots in the second half, but the Bonnies couldn't find the equalizer.
Richmond and St. Bonaventure each had 12 total shots and six on target.
The Bonnies return to action next Sunday at Massachusetts. The Minutewomen currently sit atop the Atlantic 10 standings with 13 points.
