The 2023-24 National Lacrosse League season is set to get underway Dec. 1, and multiple St. Bonaventure men's lacrosse program products aim to make their mark on the league.
In the Opening Night games, Sean Westley, '22, '23, will look to make his debut with the Las Vegas Desert Dogs.
Bona's all-time leading scorer with 93 goals and 63 assists for 156 points with the Brown and White, Westley will wear his familiar No. 51 in his rookie season with the Desert Dogs who host Albany at 10 p.m. Eastern on ESPN+. Westley was the second round pick of the Desert Dogs in the 2022 NLL Draft and the team is set for just its second NLL season after joining the league as an expansion squad last year.
Brett Beetow, '22, will open his second season in the NLL as his Halifax Thunderbirds take on Saskatchewan Friday night at 7 p.m. on ESPN+. The defenseman was drafted in the third round of the 2022 NLL Draft by the Georgia Swarm and appeared in games with both Georgia and Halifax last year after appearing in 31 games over three seasons with Bonaventure.
Fresh off a PLL championship, Brett Dobson, '22, will wait a week to make his 2023 NLL debut as the Georgia Swarm open Saturday, Dec. 9 vs. Colorado at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN+. A member of the NLL All-Rookie Team last year, Dobson immediately stamped himself as one of the best goalies in the league after being selected in the first round by the Swarm. An All-American at St. Bonaventure, he was the program's first Division I recruit after the revival of the varsity program for the 2019 season.
The defending NLL champion Buffalo Bandits will also open their schedule next Saturday at Albany and while no former Bonnies are on the active roster, that could soon change. Buffalo's 2022 first round pick Zack Belter, '22, hopes to make his professional debut later this year. He is currently on the injured list but could be activated later in the year. He signed a two-year deal with Buffalo this fall after graduating as Bona's program record-holder for caused turnovers (62) while standing second in groundballs (93).
