ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The Wichita Sports Commission has announced the addition of St. Bonaventure University baseball catcher
Jackson DeJohn to the 2023 Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award watch list.
Â
Previously known as the Johnny Bench Award, the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award honors the nation's top Division IÂ catcher as voted on by head coaches and sports information directors.
 Â
A workhorse behind the plate for the past three seasons, DeJohn was named a team captain for the 2023 campaign.
Â
This season, DeJohn has played in 42 games, starting 33 of them behind the plate.
Always an elite defensive catcher since starting his Bonaventure career, DeJohn has shown the hit tool this season as well. The senior backstop leads the team in slugging percentage (.478) with the team lead in home runs (7) and runs batted in (23). Also, DeJohn is top three on the team in runs (25) and hits (38) while throwing out 10 runners on the base paths this year from behind the plate.
Â
DeJohn is one of two Atlantic 10 catchers on the watch list, joining Michael Carico of Davidson who was a finalist last year.
He becomes the first catcher in Bonnies baseball history to be named to the Buster Posey Watch List.
The watch list will be narrowed down to the semifinalists on May 22 and the winner will be announced on June 29.
