BUFFALO – Junior Clay Peets crossed the finish line first to highlight the season-opening Little Three Championship for the St. Bonaventure men's cross country team on a warm and sunny Friday evening at Delaware Park.
Peets and sophomore teammate Aiden Scattergood took first and fourth respectively, leading the Bonnies to a second-place team finish. Canisius retained the team trophy with 29 points, ahead of Bonaventure's 41 and Niagara at 71.
It was another record-setting day for Peets, who has made such an occurrence almost routine during his Bonaventure career.
He turned in a winning time of 15:02 which was over six seconds ahead of Niagara's Braden York who clocked in at 15:08.2. Canisius' Tom Appenheimer was third at 15:09.2 while Scattergood took fourth with a PR time of 15:30.2.
Peets broke his previous 5K school record set in last year's Little Three Championship by over 14 seconds and he shattered the Delaware Park course record by over 30 seconds.
Scattergood, meanwhile, is now second individually in the program record book as he bested his time in last year's meet by 45 seconds.
Canisius was able to take the team win by earning the fifth through 10th finishing positions.
Sophomore Casey Malloy was 11th overall for the Bonnies, posting a time of 16:36.7 with the first scoring effort of his collegiate career. He was also well ahead of his 5K time of 17:18 in last year's meet.
Junior Colin McCarthy (16:38.1), freshman Lucas Catarella (16:39.4) and Ethan Luce (16.42.9) all finished together to account for the Bonnies' scoring times.
The Bonnies return to action Saturday, Sept. 23 at the Lock Haven Invitational in Pennsylvania.
