WASHINGTON, D.C. – St. Bonaventure student-athletes Gabe Williams and Braddock Damore each earned accolades from the Atlantic 10 on Monday by being named Golfer and Rookie of the Week respectively, conference officials announced.
Williams, a junior from Deansboro, N.Y., enjoyed the best week of his collegiate career with a top-10 finish followed by medalist honors in two tournaments.
He started the week by posting back-to-back rounds of even par 72 at The Links at Hiawatha Landing outside Binghamton as part of the Matthews Auto Intercollegiate. He placed in a tie for 10th in the field of over 100 competitors as he helped the Bonnies to an eighth place finish out of 17 teams.
Williams continued his strong play the following day vs. Siena in The Murray Cup at Schuyler Meadows Golf Club in the Capital District. On Tuesday, he fired a career-best round of 66, dominating the field by four shots. He drained six birdies on the day and did not have a single blemish on his scorecard, surpassing his previous collegiate best round by three strokes. He played both the front and back nine in 3-under par, finishing the par-4s in 4-under while also making birdie on a pair of par-5s.
The Atlantic 10 Golfer of the Week prize is shared this week between Williams and Charlie Kulwin of Loyola Chicago who helped his team to a victory in the Midwest last weekend.
Damore claims top rookie honors after a solid showing in the Matthews Auto Intercollegiate as well. The freshman from Warren, Pa. opened that tournament with a first round 76 but got it going in the second round with a five-shot improvement of 71. Hitting the turn at even par, Damore carded three birdies and two bogeys on the back to finish in red figures on the day.
His two-round total of 147 (76-71) earned him a T-28 finish.
For both players, the awards mark the first weekly Atlantic 10 honors of their Bonaventure careers. They join teammate Dante Bertoni who was named A-10 Rookie of the Week two weeks ago as Bonnies to receive A-10 conference accolades this fall.
St. Bonaventure closes out the fall Oct. 20-22 at the ODU/Kilmarlic Invitational in North Carolina.
