ST. BONAVENTURE (12-18, 3-6 A-10) at PITTSBURGH (14-18, 4-14 ACC)

TV: ACC Network Extra

LEADING OFF
  • The Bonnies head to Pittsburgh to play the Pitt Panthers on Wednesday evening in the Steel City. St. Bonaventure has two wins over Power 5 opponents this year, winning at Louisville on Feb. 23 and at Penn State March 19. Bona's win at Louisville marked the program's first P5 win since 2019 and this is the first season that the Bonnies have multiple P5 victories since 2008 when they defeated Boston College and West Virginia. Prior to their three-game series at Louisville in February, the Bonnies had not played an ACC opponent since a 15-14 extra innings win over Boston College March 1, 2008 in Florida.
  • St. Bonaventure won three of four games last week including a big Atlantic 10 series victory over VCU. The Bonnies won the opener Friday, 7-5, before scoring an 11-6 win Sunday in the rubber game for the program's first-ever series win vs. the Rams.
  • Last week in midweek action, the Bonnies won at Canisius last Tuesday afternoon. Senior Adam Rankie had four hits, with the fourth not only being his 100th Division I career hit, but also a bases-clearing double that put the exclamation point on a 10-run eighth inning as the Bonnies rallied from down 9-4 to win 15-9 over the Golden Griffins.
  • The Bonnies earned their first A-10 win in dramatic fashion April 7 when Adam Rankie provided a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth for an 11-10 win over Dayton. Harrison Kaufman and Paul Vossen started the rally with two-out singles followed by Rankie's game-winning hit to center.
  • The Bonnies enter this week hitting .280 as a team on the season, a mark that ranks fifth in the A-10 this season. Five Bonnies regulars are hitting better than that mark - Rankie (.351), David Marshall Jr. (.316), Jack Putney (.306), Paul Vossen (.297) and Morgan Little (.296).

ON A STREAK
Adam Rankie enters this week on a 14-game hitting streak and other Bonnies have their own streaks going as well. Morgan Little has reached base safely in 15 consecutive games while Jack Putney has an eight-game hitting streak, his longest of the year. David Marshall has also reached base safely in the last 10 games. Last week, Paul Vossen had a Bonnies season-best 17-game streak of reaching base safely snapped.

WHO'S HOT
  • Adam Rankie is hitting .400 in the last 10 contests (18-for 45) with 13 RBIs.
  • Morgan Little is hitting .345 in his last eight games (10-for-29) with four home runs and 12 RBIs.
  • Jack Putney has nine RBIs in the last 10 games.
  • Andrew Ayers has a 0.00 ERA over his last three appearances including 5.1 innings (5.1 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 6 K)
  • Tristan Ciampa has a 3.72 ERA in his last three appearances including 9.2 innings. He earned the win in relief vs. VCU with 4.2 innings out of the bullpen last Friday.
  • Michael Salina has 16 strikeouts in his last 14.1 innings pitched.

POWER MOVES
  • St. Bonaventure has scored two victories over Power 5 opponents in non-conference action this season.
  • Bona won at Louisville, 4-3, on Feb. 23 for the program's first win over a Power 5 program since 2019. Chance Moore, who is Wednesday's probable starter, was outstanding, throwing seven shutout innings after Louisville got three in the first, as he did not walk a batter and struck out four in his first career Division I start. Adam Rankie delivered the game-winning double in the eighth as the game went to extra innings as the first of a twinbill that day.
  • The Bonnies captured a 9-7 win at Penn State since March 19. After Penn State erased a 6-1 Bonnies lead after seven, a clutch two-run single from Kyle Caccamise in the eighth proved to be the game-winner.

TOP 100 WINS
St. Bonaventure has three wins over RPI Top 100 teams this season - one at Louisville (85) and two at home over VCU (95). Bona's series win over VCU was the first in program history over the Rams in their sixth series all-time.

SERIES HISTORY
Pitt owns a 5-0 series advantage. The Bonnies and the Panthers have not met since March 7, 2009 when Pitt claimed a 12-8 win in Florida. The Bonnies have played at Pitt just once - April 6, 1993 when the Panthers took a 9-7 win. Bona hosted the Panthers at Handler Park in April 1994 when Pitt came away with a 10-9 win in 10 innings. The other three meetings have all been on neutral sites.

ABOUT PITT
  • The Panthers beat No. 7 Duke in their last game this past Sunday in comeback fashion, 11-10.
  • Pitt has a .280 team batting average on the year, the same as St. Bonaventure. Four regulars hit .300 or above: Dom Popa (.328, 12 RBIs), Luke Cantwell (.306, 7 HR, 27 RBIs), Tyler Bischke (.302, 2 HR, 24 RBIs) and Jake Kendro (.300, 6 HR, 17 RBIs).
  • Pitt has a team staff ERA of 6.37 on the season.
  • The Panthers have back-to-back midweeks scheduled, playing at West Virginia Tuesday before hosting the Bonnies Wednesday.
  • Bischke was named a D-I Top-50 second baseman by D1Baseball.com in preseason and Cantwell was a Top-50 first baseman while C.J. Funk was named to the Top-100 outfielders list.
