ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure men's and women's swimming and diving programs will compete at home for the first time this season on Friday, Nov. 7 at 6:00 p.m., hosting Canisius for a dual meet at the Reilly Center Pool.
Â
The Bonnies' men's team comes into Friday's meet with high hopes after a tightly contested battle at Niagara last Saturday as the visitors fell 139-123. The squad picked up a victory against Fordham earlier this season, winning 183-111.
Â
The women's team also enters its first home competition with promise after close finishes earlier in the season, falling to Cleveland State, 157-143, and battling Fordham to a 158-142 loss.
Â
Mark Mizsei is poised to make an impact after earning Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week honors for his efforts against Niagara. The sophomore set a new pool record and top conference mark with a win in the 200-fly (1:47.31), also finding second place in the 100-fly (48.50) and helping win the 200-medley relay (1:31.14).
Â
Freshman
Kate Hill has also garnered awards this season, collecting two A-10 Rookie of the Week designations. She won the 100-free in three straight meets against Penn State, Rutgers and Fordham, and Cleveland State before taking second in the event at Niagara. Her mark of 51.89 in the season opener briefly stood as the top time in the conference and currently still ranks third.
Â
Freshman
Matheus Rinaldi also earned Rookie of the Week honors for his performance in the 1650-free against Cleveland State. Clocking in at 15:56.52, he still holds the top spot in the conference two weeks removed. Rinaldi continued his success against Niagara, posting a pool record in the 1000-free (9:37.81).
Â
The Bonnies boasted two additional pool records against the Purple Eagles as junior BYU transfer
Joseph Pyon touched the wall in 48.41 seconds for first place in the 100-fly and freshman
Sophie Baker swam the opening 50-back leg of the 200-medley relay in 25.51 seconds.
Â
Dhavgely Mendoza and
Ben O'Neill have each qualified for NCAA Diving Zones while still early in the season. O'Neill, a senior, qualified with a score of 315.10 on the 1-meter board against Fordham, while the second-year Bonnie Mendoza met the mark with a score of 286.10 on the 3-meter board that same day.
Â
Other Bonnies hitting stride as of late have been
Emanuele Zingaro and
Anna Bojana Forjan. Zingaro, a freshman, posted two victories in sprints at Niagara, winning both the 50-free (20.91) and the 100-free (45.61). He also found the top podium spot in the 50-free against Cleveland State (21.38).
Â
Forjan tabbed three podium finishes against Niagara, placing first in the 100-back (55.91) and second in both the 200-back (2:00.13) and 200-IM (2:08.23). The junior also won the 200-back (2:04.53) and the 200-IM (2:10.68) at Cleveland State.
Â
Bonaventure has enjoyed staggered success from many other student-athletes across the men's and women's rosters and will look to build on an exciting start to the year this Friday evening.
