HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure women's indoor track team collected two new school records and a pair of event victories to kick off the new season Friday night at the Houghton December Classic.
Freshman Brianna Reynolds put together a memorable debut in the sprint events. Reynolds first finished in third-place in the 60-meter hurdles at 9.61, then set a new school record in the 200 meters.
In the 200, she won her heat race with a time of 27.23, surpassing the previous SBU record of 27.46 recorded at last year's Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships by Julia Wyant. Wyant was just off her PR time as she clocked in at 27.51 with the two Bonnies finishing seventh and ninth respectively out of 53 competitors in the event.
Junior Meghan Litteer posted a new PR of 27.65 to place 10th in the 200.
Sophomore Madeline McKillop rang in the winning time for the 800 meters as she easily paced the competition with her run of 2:23.76. Senior teammate Adria Magnusson came home second at 2:27.84 while sophomore Madison McMahon clocked in fourth at 2:30.68 out of 24 competitors.
For the second year in a row, Julia Wyant opened the season by setting a top mark in the 60 meters. The sophomore came across the stripe in 8.32Â as she finished 11th out of 43 competitors in Friday's meet. Litteer was next across the line at 8.35 with a personal best time as well. Newcomer Malaika George moved to third individually in the program record book with a debut time of 8.53 in the 60. George turned in two top-10 Bona times on the day as she also ran a mark of 28.84 in the 200, good for seventh in school history individually.
Sophomore Jenna Wyant won her heat and recorded the third-fastest time of the day in the 400 as she posted 1:01.43, just off her program record of 1:01.36 recorded in the same meet a year ago. Friday's winning time of 1:00.68 was turned in by Buffalo's Jayne Williams.
Bonnies were at the front of the field in the 3000 meters as well with junior Elise Brooks (11:10.98) and sophomore Miranda Habshi (11:17.47) placing third and fourth respectively.
Bona's 4x400 relay team also captured the win as the team of Reynolds, McKillop, Jenna Wyant and Mary Trost posted the top time of 4:18.03, good for second in program history.
In the first event of the day, freshman Jillian Lozo finished second in the 5000 meters with a debut time of 19:19.17.
QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH BOB MACFARLANE
"Our athletes showed exactly what we needed to see: effort, courage and a willingness to compete. That's the foundation of what we'll build this season. We had athletes trying new events, athletes stepping up when things didn't go as planned, and athletes showing that the work put in during preseason is starting to pay off.
"We saw strong starts, smart racing and grit in the final stretch. The relays showed teamwork and determination. These early season meets aren't about perfection; they're about seeing where we are and where we need to go and this gave us a clear picture."
