Women's Lacrosse Hosts Niagara Friday in Little Three Rivalry Series Finale

The St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team is set to host Niagara Friday to finish the Little Three rivalry series. The game has been moved up to Friday afternoon due to inclement weather in Saturday's forecast. Opening draw is still scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Bonnies secured a dominant 18-6 win over Canisius Wednesday afternoon at the Marra Athletics Complex. Nine different Bonnies recorded goals in the victory, including freshmen Reagan Diehl and Sidney Van Tassel.
 
The Bonnies snapped a nine-game losing streak against the Griffins that dated back to 2009.
 
BRICK WALL
Sophomore goalie Katelyn Hicks had a breakout performance against Canisius. Hicks made a career-high 12 saves and posted a .667 save percentage. Nine of Hicks' 12 saves came in the first half, helping the Bonnies get out to a 8-4 lead in the opening half.
 
CONTROLLING THE DRAW
Junior Megan Schillinger set the Bona program record for draw controls in a single game with 12. Schillinger is up to 99 career draw controls, tying her with Keri Vito, '09, at ninth on the Bonnies all-time leaderboard.
 
Rebecca Howe, '22, set the previous single-game record at 11 on March 7, 2019 at Kennesaw State.
 
POURING IT ON
Junior Rylee Gonzalez recorded seven points (2G, 5A) in the win over Canisius, making it the second consecutive game to start the season where a Bona's player has recorded seven points. Senior Fiona McGovern (3G, 4A) tallied seven points to open the season against Pitt.
 
Brooke Piper (5G) and Tori Nascimento (3G, 2A) also posted games of five points against Canisius.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Bona's holds a 10-8 advantage in the all-time series against the Purple Eagles. The Bonnies won the first 10 meetings between the teams and Niagara has won the last eight dating back to 2012. The last meeting was in 2023 at Niagara where they earned a 13-5 win.
 
The last time the Bonnies got wins over both Canisius and Niagara in the same season was in 2009. The Bonnies scored a 19-5 win over the Purple Eagles and a 6-2 win over Canisius that season.
 
ABOUT NIAGARA
Coming off a MAAC Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2024, the Purple Eagles were selected fourth in the MAAC Preseason Poll. Reigning MAAC Defensive Player of the Year Sydney Huhtala was named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team.
 
Niagara hosted Arizona State last Sunday to start the season. The Sun Devils came away with a 15-9 victory over the Purple Eagles. Avery Olschefskie led the way for Niagara offensively, recording three goals and one assist as well as five draw controls. Huhtala tallied seven groundballs and six caused turnovers.
