FIRST PITCH
With McGraw-Jennings Field currently under renovations, St. Bonaventure will play their first home series of the season against Saint Louis at Mercyhurst University. The Bonnies are looking to bounce back from a nine-game losing streak, while Saint Louis is coming off a series win against Dayton to begin conference play. The series will start on Friday, March 13 at 2 p.m. and wrap up on Sunday, March 15 at noon.
LAST TIME OUT
The Bonnies dropped all three games to open conference play last weekend against George Mason. After facing an early 4-0 deficit, St. Bonaventure battled back with a three-run sixth inning to get within a run. Connor Vercollone and Manuel Castro each picked up RBI hits to lead the Bonnies offense. However, the offense went cold to end the game, and the Patriots took the 4-3 win. In game two, St. Bonaventure lost 15-11 in a back-and-forth affair, with Chris Hoalcraft picking up four hits and three RBI in the game. George Mason then shut out the Bonnies is game three, picking up the series sweep.
BONNIES NOTES
- Outfielder Anthony Fernandez enters this weekend having reached base in 13 straight games after picking up hits in all three games against George Mason. The redshirt junior now has six multi-hit games this season, four which he picked up three hits in. Fernandez leads the Bonnies in batting average (.343), on base percentage (.451), runs scored (13), stolen bases (7), and walks (14).
- Conner Vercollone comes into the series with a 10-game active streak of reaching base safely.
- Manuel Castro leads the Bonnies by hitting .385 (10-for-26) with runners in scoring position so far this season.
- Castro (7) and Fernandez (6) lead the Bonnies in multi-hit games.
- Friday starter David James owns a team-high 25 strikeouts over his 24.2 innings of work.
- Pitcher Ryan Kucy has been a bright spot in the bullpen for the Bonnies pitching staff. The senior, who joined the Bonnies last season as primary infielder before switching to a pitcher, leads the team with a 2.57 ERA through seven outing. SAINT LOUIS NOTES
- Entering this week, Saint Louis is 9-11 overall and 2-1 in the A-10, with a .264 team batting average and a 5.96 team ERA.
- The Billikens were picked tied for third in the Atlantic 10 Preseason Coaches' Poll, earning one first place vote.
- Last season, Saint Louis went 33-26 with an 18-12 conference record. In the conference tournament, the Billikens were eliminated by George Mason in the semifinals.
- In last season's series between the Bonnies and Billikens, Saint Louis took two out of three to win the series. The Bonnies and Billikens split the first two games, both of which went into extra innings, before Saint Louis won the rubber match
- Junior first baseman Riley Iffrig returns for Saint Louis following a Second Team All-Conference selection last season.
