St. Bonaventure dropped a 3-2 decision to Lehigh in its first baseball game of the 2004 season on Sunday.
The Bonnies took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning only to see the Mountain Hawks strike against freshman pitcher Brian Pellegrini. Forrest Doane first tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI single. Following a sacrifice, Doane scored the winning run from third base on the suicide squeeze bunt of Jeff Baker.
Pellegrini, the Bonnies' starting right fielder, suffered the loss after pitching only the ninth inning.
St. Bonaventure scored both of its runs in the sixth inning to take a 2-1 lead. Senior shortstop Eric Wilson plated senior center fielder Matt Landahl with a double. Landahl had led off the inning with a single. Later, Pellegrini, who had reached base on a walk, scored on the RBI single of sophomore designated hitter Matt Agostonelli.
Bona junior starter Mike McCormack pitched brilliantly for seven innings. He allowed only four hits and one run and struck out four.
The Bonnies had 10 hits on the day. Agostonelli led the way at 3-4, Landahl finished 2-5 and junior second baseman Craig King was 2-3.
Matt Nusimov was the winning pitcher for Lehigh, which improved to 7-2.
The Bonnies return to action on Monday against Bowling Green at 7 p.m. in Bradenton.
