ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. -
St. Bonaventure and LeMoyne split a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field as the Bonnies rallied to win the nightcap 8-6 after the Dolphins took the opener 6-2 in extra innings.
In Game 2, St. Bonaventure rallied from a 6-3 deficit with five runs in the sixth inning. Junior catcher Damian Blakeley had a run scoring single, senior shortstop Eric Wilson plated another run on a ground out, and freshman outfielder Joe Rizzo had a sacrifice fly to pull the Bonnies within 6-5. Freshman third baseman Matt Mardeusz then delivered the eventual game winning hit, a two-run double into the left-center field gap.
Mardeusz went 2-4 in the game while senior center fielder Matt Landahl and freshman catcher Adam Grap also had two hits apiece. Wilson finished 1-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Mardeusz came on to record the final two outs of the game on the mound and pick up his first save. Sophomore John Zinnicker, who threw one inning in relief, was the winner for Bona. He is now 2-1.
In the opener, LeMoyne's Mike Affronti and Andre Enriquez led off the 10th innings with back-to-back home runs, breaking a 2-2 tie. Kyle Brown plated a pair of insurance runs with a single later in the frame and LeMoyne went on to win the nearly three hour game.
The Bonnies had sent the game into extra innings with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Blakeley singled and later scored on a double by sophomore left fielder Dan Bratys.
The loss spoiled a strong effort by Bona junior starter Mike McCormack, who threw eight innings and allowed only one earned run with six strikeouts.
Wilson went 3-7 on the day with two RBI and his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot in Game 2. The two games took nearly five and a half hours to complete.
St. Bonaventure is now 23-18 while LeMoyne, which is ranked 13th in the Northeast Region coaches poll, is 28-18.
The Bonnies will host Massachusetts in a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series this Friday and Saturday. Friday's doubleheader will begin at noon.
