ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. -
The St. Bonaventure softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Canisius Wednesday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field. The Griffs took the opener 5-4 and game two 4-1.
The Bonnies fall to 14-16 overall on the season, while the Golden Griffins improve to 20-18.
In game one, St. Bonaventure took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Senior Lauren Krieger drilled a two-run double off the right field wall scoring Brianna Bricker and Anna Nagro. Canisius answered back with three runs in the top of the second to take its first lead of the game, 3-2.
The lead switched hands again as St. Bonaventure pushed across two in its half of the second inning to make 4-3. Sophomore Patricia McKeon scored the first run on a wild pitch from Piar. Bricker delivered a sacrifice fly to center on the next pitch that was just deep enough to score senior Jessica King from third.
Canisius' Ashley Bonetto ripped an RBI single in the fourth to tie the game at four. Canisius took the lead for good in the fifth as a wild pitch from Bricker brought home the game-winning run.
Bricker allowed three earned runs on six hits and struck out five in a complete games work.
The Bona bats managed just three hits in game two. Sophomore Kirstin Strong was responsible for the lone Bonaventure run as she blasted her first career homerun in the third inning. The Griffs turned in a pair of one-run innings in the first and second and plated two in the seventh.
Senior Molly McCarthy went the distance on the mound in game two. She gave up nine hits and struck two.
St. Bonaventure returns to the diamond in Dayton, Ohio for an Atlantic 10 doubleheader on Saturday, April 22. Game one is scheduled to start at noon.
