St. Bonaventure won its second baseball game in as many days at Rhode Island with a 6-3 decision on Saturday afternoon at Beck Field.
The Bonnies' win clinched their three-game series against the Rams, who entered the weekend in first place in the Atlantic 10 Conference standings. St. Bonaventure moved to 15-14 overall and 9-5 in the Atlantic 10. Rhode Island fell to 22-8 and 9-4.
St. Bonaventure overcame a 3-1 deficit with four runs in the eighth inning. Sophomore center fielder Randy Moley and junior first baseman Brian Pellegrini started the rally with singles, and junior left fielder Joe Rizzo plated Moley with a single to make it 3-2. One out later, sophomore designated hitter Tristan Mulcahy delivered with a two-out, two run single that gave the visitors a 4-3 lead. After junior second baseman Kieran Malone was hit by a pitch, sophomore catcher Adam Grap was hit by a pitch to force home the Bonnies' final run of the inning.
Pellegrini and Rizzo gave the Bonnies an insurance run in the ninth to make it 6-3. Pellegrini doubled and Rizzo followed with a single up the middle to score his teammate.
Junior southpaw Eddie Williams (4-3) shut out the Rams in the eighth and ninth innings to earn the win. He gave up only one hit and struck out three. Starter John Zinnicker went 6-2/3 innings and allowed three runs on six hits.
Pellegrini and Rizzo both had two hits on the day; Rizzo went 2-2 with two RBI and three walks while Pellegrini finished 2-5. Moley finished 1-5 with two runs scored.
The Bonnies and Rams will complete their series on Sunday. First pitch is set for noon.
