NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. -
A four run second inning and strong performance by starting pitcher Ryan McGorman led Canisius over St. Bonaventure 7-0 in the Big 4 Classic Championship Game Wednesday at Sal Maglie Stadium.
McGorman allowed two hits and struck out five batters in six innings of work as the Golden Griffins clamed their second straight Big 4 Classic title.
St. Bonaventure struggled at the plate, recording just three hits in the game. Sophomore shortstop Kevin Suminski (1-4) and second baseman Kieran Malone (1-3) each had hits for the Bonnies, while Josh Sova (1-1) added the third with a pinch-hit single in the eighth inning.
Canisius led 1-0 heading into the second inning, but expanded their lead thanks to two Bonnies' errors. Connor Burke hit a sharp ground ball to third base with the bases loaded, but the ball was bobbled by St. Bonaventure third baseman Josh Perkins - allowing a runner to score from third. The next batter laced a single to center field, which scored Ryan Asis and Alec Cabello on a fielding error by right fielder T.J. Pennino. The Golden Griffs added a run on a sacrifice fly by Ian Choy to take a 5-0 lead after two.
Canisius scored runs in the fourth and sixth innings en route to the final margin of victory.
Senior pitcher Ryan Kerr was charged the loss for the Bonnies. Kerr (3-1) allowed five runs (one earned) on six hits in 3.1 innings of work despite recording six strike outs.
The Bonnies fell to 15-19 on the season, while Canisius improved to 12-27
