WASHINGTON, D.C. - A George Washington goal in
the sixth minute play proved to be the difference, as the St.
Bonaventure women's soccer team began its Atlantic 10 weekend road
trip with a 1-0 loss to the Colonials on Friday afternoon at Mount
Vernon Field.
The loss drops the Bonnies' overall record to 8-8 on the season,
including 5-2 in A-10 play heading into Sunday's game at Richmond.
GW (5-7-4), on the other hand, improves to 2-4-2 in the league.
"We're playing against teams that are either facing elimination
from the conference tournament or playing for a top six position in
the standings," said head coach Manoj Khettry. "None of these
remaining games are easy, especially on the road. We simply have to
want it more than our opponent and today, even though the stats
were pretty even, GWU simply wanted it just a little more and that
was the difference."
St. Bonaventure applied plenty of pressure throughout game and more
specifically the second half, resulting in 11 shots, including
seven on goal, and three corner kicks over the final 45 minutes.
For the game, the Brown and White were out-shot, 17-14.
The lone goal of the game came from Sierra Smidinger at the 5:57
mark off a pass from Kristen Slack.
George Washington keeper Lindsey Rowe made seven saves in the win,
while St. Bonaventure goalie Nicole Markert made five.
The Bonaventure forward trio of juniors Courtney Bosse and Anna
Cunningham, along with sophomore Dakota Carroll accounted for 11 of
the team's 14 shots.
Sunday's game in Richmond, Va., is slated to start at 2:30 p.m.
