ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The St. Bonaventure
women's soccer team began its final weekend of regular season
play by falling to Dayton, 3-0, on a rainy Wednesday afternoon at
McGraw-Jennings Field. The game was makeup of the Oct. 16th contest
that was cancelled due to rain and snow.
With the loss, the Bonnies stand at 9-9 on the season, including
6-3 in the A-10 heading into the final weekend of regular season
action. With a postseason berth already secured, St. Bonaventure is
currently tied for third place with Fordham, who it hosts on
Sunday.
One of just two unbeaten teams in the entire nation, the Flyers
improve to 13-0-5 overall and 9-0-1 in the A-10 with just one game
remaining. Dayton has surrendered just three goals the entire
year.
"Dayton's a good team, but it was a competitive match. I
thought we did a good job of managing our personnel and minutes
that everyone played because of the unique three games in five days
situation that we're faced with,” said head coach Manoj
Khettry. “We know what we have to do in our remaining two
games and I know our players are focused and committed to achieving
our goals.”
The Flyers got on the board twice in the first half in the 30th and
42nd minutes, respectively. Cara Cornacchia scored the first goal
off a nice pass from Colleen Williams, while three-time A-10
All-Conference choice Mandi Back turned in a nice individual effort
to account for the second goal.
It took Dayton just under five minutes to find the back of the net
in the second half, as Kelly Blumenschein tallied a goal from a
near impossible angle on the right of the goal to make it 3-0.
For the game, the Flyers out-shot the Brown and White by a 15-4
margin.
Both St. Bonaventure keepers got work during the game. Junior Nicole
Markert started the game and played the opening 45 minutes
making four saves. Freshman Kathryn Kerkman
took the goal during the second half.
St. Bonaventure will resume regular A-10 weekend action on Friday
by hosting La Salle at 3 p.m. The Bonnies will then host Fordham on
Sunday during Senior Day. Seniors Katelyn
Shelofsky and Sarah Wolcott will
be honored prior to the start of the game.
