Thanks to a goal by junior Courtney Bosse in the 12th minute,
the St. Bonaventure women's soccer team was able to survive a gutsy
effort by Duquesne and hold on for 1-0 Atlantic 10 victory on
Saturday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field.
With the win, the Bonnies (6-6) build on their best A-10 start
in program history and improve to 3-0 in the conference. The Brown
and White have yet to surrender a goal in A-10 action and are
currently on their second three-game conference win streak in the
last two seasons.
Duquesne falls to 0-3 in the A-10 with the loss and 3-7 overall.
"In many ways today we were dominated and out-played, but the
one positive is that we found a way to win," said head coach Manoj
Khettry. "We scored a great goal and our backs and our goal keeper
kept another clean sheet. We've got to continue to get better if
we're going to play better soccer."
The Dukes applied pressure on the offensive end throughout the
game, building a 16-6 shot advantage. A majority of the Duquesne
scoring chances came in the second half, as it accounted for 10 of
the 14 shots in the period.
St. Bonaventure junior goalie Nichole Markert was up to the
task, though, making five saves to preserve her third straight
shutout and the eighth of her career. Markert now stands at 4-3 on
the season.
The lone goal of the game came at the 11:49 mark just as rain
started to fall for the first of many times throughout the contest.
Bosse gathered a nice pass from classmate Anna Cunningham and split
two defenders en route to beating Duquesne goalie Gabby Morrin on
the near post. The game-winning goal was the third of the season
for Bosse and her team-best fifth score.
The Dukes fired the final nine shots of the game, including
three on net, but were unable to beat Markert down the stretch.
Duquesne also held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks, but did commit 18
fouls to the Brown and White's 10.
St. Bonaventure will head to Philadelphia next weekend for a
pair of Atlantic 10 matches. The Bonnies will take on Temple on
Friday, October 9, at 4 p.m. and then play Saint Joseph's on Sunday
at 1 p.m.
