ST. BONAVENUTRE, N.Y. - In a match that would
decide the third place finisher in the Atlantic 10 Conference, the
St. Bonaventure women's soccer team wrapped up regular season play
on Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 loss to Fordham at McGraw-Jennings
Field.
The Bonnies (10-10) will enter this week's A-10 Tournament as
the fourth seed and will take on fifth-seeded Saint Louis in the
opening round on Thursday, Nov. 5. It will mark the second
consecutive season the two teams have met in the postseason. St.
Bonaventure defeated the Billikens, 1-0, earlier this season.
Fordham finishes the regular season with the same 7-4 A-10 record
as the Bonnies, but will be the third seed due to today's win. The
Rams will take on sixth-seeded UMass in the other opening round
game, while regular season champ Dayton and host Charlotte receive
first round byes.
"It was disappointing result today, but I felt like the wear and
tear of playing three games in five days caught up to us," said
head coach Manoj
Khettry. "I was pleased beyond belief at the kind of
effort that everyone gave today. We created more than enough
chances and I felt like had we not played three matches this week
we would have done a better job at finishing those chances"
The Rams got on the board with just under two minutes remaining
in the first half on a goal by Katherine Wah. With Bona keeper
Nicole
Markert coming out of net, Fordham's Megan Cookson
found Wah wide open with an empty to make it 1-0.
The opening minutes of the second half saw the Bonnies apply
consistent pressure, including a shot by sophomore Tori
Burchett that rang off the crossbar.
With St. Bonaventure unable to find the back of the net, the
Rams tacked on an insurance goal at the 54:16 mark when Leah
Loguidice's shot from the top of the goal box found the right
corner of the net for a 2-0 Fordham lead.
Junior Anna
Cunningham hit the post later in the half, as the
Bonnies produced several scoring opportunities that resulted in no
goals. For the game, Fordham held a slight 11-10 shot advantage.
Markert made five saves in the game, including a pair of sensation
diving saves.
Seniors Katelyn
Shelofsky and Sarah
Wolcott were honored prior to the start of the game.
The duo has played in a combined 143 games over their careers and
made over 100 starts.
"Even though we didn't get the win for our seniors today, we
have a chance to play for them on Thursday in the conference
tournament," Khettry said.
