Greenwood leads URI to shutout win over Bonnies

April 18, 2009

Box Score

KINGSTON, R.I. - The St. Bonaventure baseball team will have one more chance to figure out the Rhode Island pitching staff after a complete game three-hitter by Nick Greenwood led the Rams to a 6-0 win in game two on Saturday at Bill Beck Field.

Greenwood struck out just four batters en route to improving to 3-3, but never allowed more than one base runner in an inning. Greenwood faced the minimum number of batters over the final five innings, allowing just two base runners that were quickly put down by double plays.

The Bonnies (16-14, 5-8) have managed just two runs and nine hits off the URI staff through 18 innings in the series. The third and final game of the weekend is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Sunday. Senior Jim Britton (5-2, 3.59) will take the mound for the Bonnies, while Rhode Island will send Eric Smith (3-1, 2.63 ERA). Both pitchers lead their team in ERA.

Freshman Sebastian Bellitto turned in a gutsy performance on the mound, tossing all eight innings while striking out a season-high seven batters. Bellitto gutted out all eight innings despite giving up 12 hits, but held the Rams to just three runs over the first six innings.

Trailing 1-0, the Brown and White's best scoring opportunity came in the top of the fourth inning. Sophomore Jesse Bosnik led off the inning with a single and made his way over to third on a sacrifice bunt and a ground out. With two outs and junior Kyle Gorby at the plate, Bosnik attempted to steal home but tagged out just before he hit the plate.

St. Bonaventure managed just two base runners the rest of the way as Greenwood and URI cruised to their 23rd win of the season and improved to 11-2 in the A-10.
