Late goal lifts Oakland past Women's Soccer

Aug. 30, 2009

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Sarah Lynch's goal with just over six minutes left proved to be the game-winner for Oakland as the St. Bonaventure women's soccer dropped the final game of its weekend trip through Michigan by a 2-1 score on Sunday afternoon at OU Soccer Field.

The loss slips the Bonnies' record to 1-2 on the young season, while the Grizzlies move to 1-1 with their second 2-1 win in as many years over the Brown and White.

"Give credit to Oakland, they worked harder than we did and they wanted it more," said head coach Manoj Khettry. "We didn't come to play in the first half so we had to chase the game. It's disappointing to lose a game that was winnable, but unless we play with more heart and passion we are going to be disappointed with our results."

Oakland opened the scoring at the 22:36 mark when Deanna Colarossi broke free of the Bona defense for a one-on-one with goalie Nicole Markert. Colarossi took a nice pass from Shannon Doyle and finished off the play, netting the first goal of the season for the Grizzlies.

After failing to score on its first seven shots in the first half and first of the second half, St. Bonaventure tied the game at 1-1 in the 52nd minute on junior Anna Cunningham's first goal of the season. Cunningham beat the OU keeper from just six yards out.

The Bonnies racked up nine shots in the final frame, but failed to find the back of the net. Lynch's game-winning goal was set up by Melissa Hartwig and Nicole DeLuca who found the junior open inside the box.

For the game, St. Bonaventure held a 15-12 edge in shots, while corner kicks favored Oakland by a 7-5 margin. Markert finished with four saves in goal for the Brown and White.

The Bonnies will look to bounce back next weekend when they host a pair of Big 4 opponents at McGraw-Jennings Field. St. Bonaventure will welcome Canisius to campus on Friday, Sept. 4 for a 5 p.m. tilt, while Buffalo will visit on Sunday at 1 p.m.
