Duquesne Takes Down Women's Soccer, 2-1

PITTSBURGH — Duquesne midfielder Paige Langhals broke a 1-1 tie with a header off of a corner kick in the 77th minute to lift the Dukes(4-5-1, 1-0-0 Atlantic 10) to a 2-1 win over St. Bonaventure (6-5-0, 0-1-0) Saturday night at Arthur J. Rooney Athletic Field in the Atlantic 10 opener for both squads.

St. Bonaventure junior midfielder/forward Hannah Lapp staked the Bonnies to a 1-0 lead, but host Duquesne rallied for goals in the 34th and 77th minutes to earn the win. After winning five straight, the Bonnies have now dropped two in a row.

"This is a disappointing loss, but I thought Duquesne worked harder and outcompeted us, especially in the second half," said Bonnies coach Manoj Khettry.

"With a one goal lead on the road you have to continue to press forward and find that second goal and we didn't do that. We squandered a number of good opportunities that we had.

The bottom line was that we just weren't sharp today and if we expect o make it back to the Atlantic 10 tournament we have to find a way to be sharper and compete for 90 minutes because every match is going to be as competitive as this one was."

Running along the far sideline in the 20th minute, senior Courtney Bosse found Lapp with a cross in the middle of the field. Lapp settled the ball and carried momentum to her right as she finished her first goal of the season with her right foot.

The Dukes evened the score in the 34th minute when a late through ball from Kristin Vinicky found the foot of Lauren Ott, who one-timed a shot that slipped past Megan Junker inside the near post. Vinicky drew the defense and dished it off at the final second to notch the tally. Junker (0-1-0) made her first career start and posted eight saves in the loss.

Langhals' header snapped a three-match skid for the Dukes, who improved to 9-5 in the all-time series between Duquesne and St. Bonaventure.

"We have to find a way now to bounce back as we have two tough road games next week in Charlotte and Saint Louis," added Khettry. The Bonnies take on the 49ers Oct. 8 and battle the Billikens Oct. 10.

NOTES: The Dukes wore all white uniforms while the Bonnies were in all black … St. Bonaventure was well-represented in the stands with several banners and signs on display …The family of freshman defender Jordan Calabria hosted the team's pregame meal in nearby Moon Township, Pa. …   Junker supplanted senior Nicole Markert in goal … Markert had started the previous seven games with three shutouts and five goals against … SBU is 2-6 against Duquesne in Pittsburgh and 1-4 in its first A-10 game of the season under Khettry.
