VESTAL, N.Y. – A seven-run fourth inning
for the St. Bonaventure softball team pushed the Bonnies past
Binghamton, 8-6, in game two of a doubleheader on a chilly
Wednesday afternoon at East Gym Field.
In game one, three Bonnies hit home runs, but Binghamton's
Jessica Phillips hit two home runs on her way to tallying four RBI
to lead Binghamton to a 7-5 win.
With the split the Bonnies head into their final home conference
series with a 10-23 record when
they host Saint Louis on Saturday. Game one of the
doubleheader begins at noon. Binghamton moves to 22-16 on the
year.
Phillips tallied the lone run of the first inning off Stephanie
DeLuca's single. The Bearcats then tacked on three runs in the
second and one more in the third while pitcher Rhoda Marsteller and
the Bearcat defense held the Bonnies scoreless for three
innings.
Home runs from junior Maureen
Wells in the fourth and freshman Hali
Enderby (pictured) in the fifth brought the Bonnies
within two, 5-3 heading into the sixth.
Phillips again came up big for Binghamton, hammering out a
two-run long ball to give the Bearcats the final go head as they
led 7-2 going into the final frame.
St. Bonaventure seventh inning rally was short lived as
sophomore Brooke
Frey's three-run homer to right field was not enough
to overcome the early deficit.
Binghamton opened game two with a 5-0 lead through the third
inning in part to two home runs and seven hits. The Bonnies offense
was able to find their rhythm and rallied seven runs in the fourth
as they batted around the lineup.
Junior Kara
Morenus got things started with a double to right
center before Frey singled to the same side. Wells hit
another single, plating the first run of the inning. Pinch
hitter, freshman Danielle
Frye, hit her first double of the season to score two
more runners. The Bonnies took a walk before freshman
Jessenia
Andujar loaded the bases on a single down the left
field line. Senior Stephanie
Narde hit a one-bagger to center field to tally three
RBI and give St. Bonaventure its first lead of the series, 7-5,
heading into the bottom of the fourth.
The Bonnies added another run in the fifth and sophomore pitcher
Diana
Phalon allowed only one more Binghamton run to pick up
her first win of the season. Phalon went five innings
allowing just five hits and giving up two runs.
Five different Bonnies finished the games with two or more hits
while both Frey and Narde led with three RBI each.
