NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – St.
Bonaventure women's lacrosse team held the Purple Eagles to
just two second half goals as the Bonnies defeated Big 4 rival
Niagara, 17-9, on a sunny Tuesday afternoon at Niagara Field.
The Bonnies are currently on a three-game winning streak and
improve to 7-5 on the season while Niagara falls to 1-5 overall.
Senior Molly Hastrich paced the Bonnies,
tallying six goals and one assist going 3-for-4 on
free position shots while junior Christine Hanley
and sophomore Danielle Drabin added four goals
each. Hanley also added two assists.
Sophomore Samantha Cavallaro and the freshman
duo of Kellyn Savage and Tiffany
Raskopf added to the Bonnies' goal total with one
apiece.
The Brown and White held a margin in every statistical category
going 38-to-20 in shots and holding a 17-12 advantage in ground
balls and 18-10 on draw controls.
The home team took a 4-2 advantage by 19:59, but Hanley's
back-to-back goals brought the teams even, 4-4, at the 15:19
mark. The teams traded short runs, tying the game two more
times before the half with the final tie, 7-7, coming with less
than seven minutes remaining in the first.
St. Bonaventure held a slight 9-7 lead at the half thanks to
Hastrich's first free-position shot of the day and
Hanley's unassisted goal. The duo started an 8-1 run
that lasted through the 13 minute mark of the second half, giving
the Bonnies a 15-8 lead.
Hastrich netted the first goal of the second frame before
Niagara's Rianne Farrugia scored to make it 10-8. The Bonnies
then took control of the game, scoring five goals of their own and
holding the Purple Eagles scoreless for more than 19 minutes.
Drabin scored three of her goals in the final 15 minutes of the
second half including back-to-back goals at 14:46 and 13:13 in the
second frame. Hanley scored her fourth goal of the game with
13 seconds remaining to give the Bonnies their second-best win
margin of the season.
Senior Tori Waheibi picked up eight saves in
the win bringing her career total to 249, good for third in the
program record book.
The Bonnies return home to host their first Atlantic 10 game of
the season when the Temple Owls visit McGraw-Jennings Field on
Friday. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
