ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — Rhode Island starter
Tim Boyce tossed a three-hit shutout and the Rams
plated a run in four of the first five innings en route to a 7-0
win over St. Bonaventure in the Atlantic 10 weekend series opener
on Friday at Fred Handler Park.
Boyce's second complete game of the season featured seven
strikeouts and no walks, as he faced just three batters over the
minimum of 27 for a nine-inning game. It marked the first time the
Bonnies have been shutout this season, while their three-hits were
also a season-low.
The loss moves St. Bonaventure to 15-25 through 40 games and
6-13 in the A-10. The second place Rams now stand at 23-20 overall,
including 12-7 in conference.
St. Bonaventure starter Eddie Gray was roughed
up for three runs in the first inning, but battled back to hold the
Rams to just one earned run over his final four innings. Gray
finished with a season-high eight strikeouts and gave up seven
hits.
Freshman second baseman Jason Radwan (pictured)
had two of the team's three hits with a pair of singles in
his last two at-bats. The multi-hit game was the 12th of
the season for Radwan. Sophomore Nick Brennen
picked up the only other hit for the Bonnies with a single in the
second inning.
Rhode Island finished the game with nine hits and was aggressive
on the base paths with five steals. The first seven batters of the
URI lineup had at least one hit.
Game two of the three-game series is slated to start at noon on
Saturday. With high winds in the forecast, stay tuned to www.GoBonnies.com for schedule updates.
