Cunningham, Hoenicke Help Bonnies Snap Skid

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — Senior Anna Cunningham notched a goal and an assist, freshman Courtney Hoenicke added the first tally of her career, and Nicole Markert earned her 11th career shutout in a 3-0 St. Bonaventure (2-3-0) win opposite Bowling Green (0-4-1) Sunday at McGraw-Jennings Field.

The win snaps a three-game skid for the Bonnies, who turned in a clean sheet for the first time since a 2-0 blanking at Richmond last season. Through five games, St. Bonaventure has the same record as the 2009 squad that set a program record by recording double-digit wins for the second straight campaign under fifth-year coach Manoj Khettry.

"Overall, this is probably the best game we have played thus far in terms of creating chances, possessing, finishing chances and limiting the opponent to few or no chances during the course of the game," said Khettry of his team's convincing win over the Falcons. "I thought we were able to keep possession and sustain our rhythm for significantly longer (today), and I think that made such a difference."

In the ninth minute, freshman defender Courtney Hoenicke put the Bonnies on the board with a highlight goal from 40 yards out. After pushing the offense forward, Emily Buccilla moved the ball back to Hoenicke, who sent a high, lofted shot over the head of Falcons' keeper Laura Arnold and into the top left corner for her the first goal of her young career. Arnold made seven saves in the loss.

At the back, St. Bonaventure defenders broke up a number of would-be threats in front of senior keeper Nicole Markert, who was tested little in her two-save outing.

Cunningham had a hand in the Bonnies' next two goals and has now recorded at least 10 points in each of her four seasons in the Brown and White. She found junior Tori Burchett at the top of the box before Burchett beat the keeper low in the 62nd minute and gave the home side the final 3-0 margin when she finished a cross from Hannah Lapp with a lunging header in the 85th.

After recording just three goals and four assists in all of 2009, Cunningham eclipsed her last year's goal total with Sunday's score and moved into third place on the all-time assists ledger with her 21st helper. She ranks eighth on the SBU scoring list with 63 points, including four goals and two assists this year.

"I'm so happy to see her bounce back (after a down year) and get back into the goal-scoring swing," added Khettry. "She has worked really hard to be a great leader for this team."

The Bonnies return to action on Friday in the opening game of the Nike/Raider Invitational hosted by Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y. The Brown and White are scheduled to play Cornell at 7 p.m. Sept. 10 and will face off against the host Raiders on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
