PITTSBURGH – The St. Bonaventure men's swimming and diving team hits the road for its first official meet of the 2012-2013 season at Trees Pool in the Steel City on Saturday against Big East foe Pittsburgh. The diving portion of the event begins at 11, with swimming set to commence an hour later at Noon.
The meet will be a 'Pink the Pool' event as both the Bonnies and Panthers will sport pink swim caps as they join the fight against breast cancer. The meet will also be the Panthers first official race of the year.
SBU participated in an exhibition meet last Saturday at the University at Buffalo against Niagara, Binghamton and the host Bulls in preparation of the Pitt meet. The Bonnies will look to bounce back from defeats at the hands of the Panthers by scores of 201-99 and 158-125.
In last year's meeting, current Bona senior Elias Homerin grabbed two first-place finishes in the 500-yard freestyle and 1,000-yard freestyle to record 9 points in both meets. Homerin also had a second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly to record 4 points. Sophomore Ripley Danner also had a first-place finish in the 200-yard IM to notch 9 points and a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle.
Last week, SBU competed in the annual WNY invite where junior James Martin had a first-place finish. Martin finished in first place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:43.54, he also placed third in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:49.56 and touched in at 1:56.05 in the 200-yard butterfly, which was good for a second-place finish. He finished in second place in the 200-yard backstroke with at time of 2:14.40.
Following the meet with Pittsburgh, the Bonnies return to the pool in a week on Oct. 26 against Canisius in Buffalo, N.Y.
