Baseball Rallies for Two in Eighth, Bonnies Defeat Niagara

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Back-to-back RBI singles in the top of the eighth lifted St. Bonaventure (8-6) to an 8-6 non-conference win over Niagara (7-11) at a sunny and warm Fred Handler Park on Tuesday.

After seeing a five-run lead erased in the top of the seventh, Austin Ingraham and Michael Meredith came through with consecutive singles with runners on second to keep the Bonnies in front of the Purple Eagles. Meredith finished 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI on the day, with Ingraham also knocking in two runs to help St. Bonaventure to its third win in four games.

Meredith bunted a runner home in the second to help SBU take a 2-1 lead before a right-field double from Jason Radwan, and Billy Urban's sac fly added to the tally to stake SBU to a 4-1 cushion through three innings.

Eric Jutca singled to score catcher Mike Greico from second in the fourth. In the sixth, Nick Brennan drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a passed ball, moved to third on a fly ball to right and came around to score the Bonnies' sixth run on a sac fly from Ingraham.

Starter Asa Johnson (no decision) worked into the seventh inning, but was lifted with the bases loaded and just one out after tossing six and a third. The Purple Eagles rallied behind a two-RBI single from Kevin Paulsen and a hard single up the middle from Adam Wagner to pull even after seven.

Brennan drew a leadoff walk once again to spark the rally in the eighth, moving to second on a scarifice bunt from Greico and scoring on Ingraham's shot up the middle. Ingraham stole second to move into scoring position and came home on Meredith's single for the insurance tally.

The Bonnies begin conference play with a three-game set at Dayton this weekend. First pitch is sceduled for 3 p.m. on Friday.
