ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – A first half goal off a corner kick and strong defense gave St. Bonaventure a 1-0 victory over George Washington on Friday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field.
Playing their initial Atlantic 10 Conference home game this season, the Bonnies also recorded their first A-10 win.
In the 26th minute, the Bonnies forced a corner kick, which junior Brittany Charles crossed into the box. Senior Taylor Broderick, who had come forward from her defensive spot, headed Charles' pass by Colonials keeper Nicole Ulrick. It was Broderick's first goal of the year and just the second of her career.
While neither team had another serious scoring chance the rest of the first half, GW pressured the Bonnies and senior keeper Megan Junker throughout the second half. The Colonials Lina Proska had the best chance midway through the second half, but her shot rang off the left post.  GW out-shot the Bonnies 7-2 in the second half.
"I'm really proud of our team," said St. Bonaventure coach Steve Brdarski. "We talked all week about playing hard and defending and we did both. Great goal by Taylor off a set piece … it's good to be home."
Junker finished with two saves while Ulrick recorded four.
St. Bonaventure improved to 1-3 in the Atlantic 10 and 4-8-1 overall. Â GW fell to 5-7-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
St. Bonaventure will remain at home to face VCU this Sunday, Oct. 20, at 1:00.
