ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Junior Lauren Hill scored with 4:40 remaining in the second overtime to give St. Bonaventure a 3-2 win over St. Joseph's on Sunday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field.
Hill's heroics gave St. Bonaventure its fourth consecutive win and likely clinched the Bonnies a spot in the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament. St. Bonaventure, now 7-8-1 overall and 4-3 in the A-10, has one game remaining, next weekend at UMass.Â
On a bitter cold and wet Senior Day, the Bonnies twice had the lead but saw the Hawks twice battle back to tie the game and eventually force the overtime.
St. Bonaventure dominated the first half but could not crack the Saint Joseph's defense until there was just under a minute left. Brittany Charles sent a corner kick into the box and Caitlin MacConnell headed it home to give the Bonnies a 1-0 lead in the 44th minute.
St. Joseph's tied the game in the 66nd minute on a header from Mo Hawkins. Just three minutes later, Gabriella Balseca put the Bonnies ahead 2-1 when she ran in behind two Hawks defenders and headed a crossing pass from Charles past St. Joseph's keeper Lauren Jancuska. It was Balseca's first goal of the season.
St. Joseph's again battled back and tied the game at 2-2 when Shannon Farrell lofted a header past Bonnies' keeper Megan Junker.
In the overtime, the Bonnies controlled play and had several chances prior to the game-winner. Hill's goal came when she took a through pass from Charles, who assisted on all three of the Bonnies' goals, and slid a hard, low a shot by Jancuska. It was Hill's fourth goal of the year and first game-winner.
"That was a fitting game for our seniors on Senior Day," said St. Bonaventure coach Steve Brdarski. "They kept working all season long, kept going no matter what, and they've led us to this point. We controlled this game today. I feel good about the soccer we're playing."
Junker, a senior, made three saves. St. Bonaventure out-shot the Hawks 19-10 and had 10 corner kicks to the Hawks' five.
St. Joseph's fell to 6-7-3 overall and 2-3-1 in the A-10.
St. Bonaventure will conclude the regular season next Saturday, Nov. 2, at UMass.Â
