GENEVA, OHIO- The St. Bonaventure men's swimming and diving team finished the third day of the Atlantic 10 Championships at the Spire Institute in first-place with 470 points.
In the 400-yard IM, the Brown and White team of Vatslav Lets, Matthew Schutt, Ripley Danner and Viacheslav Shchukin took home the gold medal with a time of 3:15.49, shattered the A-10 All-Time Record.
The Bonnies looked to the 200-yard freestyle to keep moving up the ranks, taking second, third and fifth place and stacking up 47 points. Michael Pilyugin swam in at 1:37.44 for his second-place finish, Shchukin took third place with a time of 1:38.22 and Jimmy Martin came in at 1:38.98 for his fifth-place finish.
40 points were added to the team score in the 100-yard butterfly. Danner took third place with a time of 48.61, while teammate Nathan Destree came in just behind at 48.80 good for a fourth-place finish. Matthew Rochna touched in at 50.08 for a 10th-place finish and Mike Burud came in at 50.80 for his 15th-place finish.
Lets touched in at 48.70 for a gold medal in the 100-yard backstroke. Pilyugin came in at 49.62 for a fourth-place finish.
Bonaventure continued their winning steak in the 100-yard breaststroke. Danner came in for his third top-three finish of the night at 55.41, good for a silver medal. Schutt touched in just behind at 55.69 and a bronze medal. Burud took sixth place with a time of 56.45.
Freshman Gregg Byrne showcased his talents in the 400 IM, touching in at 4:01.13 and taking seventh place. Mike Hartwell came in at 4:07.74, good for a 16th-place finish in the consolation final.
After day three of competition, standings on the men's side are as followed: St. Bonaventure (470), Massachusetts (389.5), Xavier (363), George Washington (270), Saint Louis (263.5), Fordham (239.5), and La Salle (239.5).
The Bonnies will return to the Spire Institute tomorrow for the final day of competition with prelims beginning at 10:30 a.m. followed by the finals at 6:30 p.m.
