BUFFALO, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team (1-1) visited Little Three rival Canisius (1-2) on Wednesday night and for the second straight season ousted the Griffs on their home turf. The Bonnies used a pair of second half goals coupled with stellar defense to bring home the 2-0 victory, their first of the 2013 season. Â
The Bonnies once again would go with a goalie by committee in this one. Megan Junker patrolled the net in the first half while Christina Sarokon took over in the second frame.
Neither team gained any sort of advantage in the first half. Each team peppered eight shots as they battled to a 0-0 draw at the break. Junker was forced to make just two saves while Canisius' Megan Tock made four.
Caitlin MacConnell did not start the game but started the second half for the Brown and White which turned out to be a great move by first year head coach Steve Brdarski, who was in search of his first win at St. Bonaventure.
The Junior, Chittenango, N.Y. native would fire three shots in this one. It was her third in the 57th minute that would find its way to the back of the net from 18 yards out and eventually serve as the game-winner. The tally is MacConnell's first of the 2013 season. Alyssa Lapp and Brittany Charles assisted on the play.
Molly Curry, 2012's top returning goal-scorer for the Brown and White got into the act in the 66th minute when she capitalized and finished a ball that deflected off the Griffs' goalkeeper. It was her second score in as many games. The tally all but sealed the game for the Bonnies as the defense remained stout for the remainder of the contest.
Christina Sarokon made four saves in the second frame to secure the joint shutout with Junker. Overall, it was Canisius who outshot the Brown and White 16-13. The Griffs also held a 6-4 corner kick advantage.
Prior to tonight's game, head coach Steve Brdarski appointed the captains for the 2013 season. Seniors Courtney Hoenicke, Alyssa Lapp and Megan Junker have been awarded the captain title.
"We are committed to making the 2013 season a great year, and these three ladies have been a big part of the team chemistry we have been able to build in the last 7 months" Brdarski stated. "They were selected for who they are and what they do on and off the field. I have seen many people accept the 'role' of being a captain, but Courtney, Alyssa, and Megan are focused on doing more and being responsible for our team. Our staff is lucky to have such a great group of seniors that have been committed to this program, and we are excited about our captains and this class representing our team, school, and alumni in the best way possible!"
The Bonnies will make their debut at McGraw-Jennings Field on Friday (Aug. 30) at 3 p.m. The game will be the first of a doubleheader with the men's team. Both programs will be welcoming Big Four rival Buffalo.
