ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team (1-2) fell behind early and despite a late offensive push, fell to Buffalo (2-1) on Friday (Aug. 30) afternoon in its home opener by a score of 2-1.Â
Megan Junker made her third consecutive start in goal for the Brown and White but once again would split the game with Christina Sarokon. Â
The Bonnies controlled the pace of the game completely over the first 13 minutes before finally allowing Buffalo a look at the goal. Molly Curry, Stephanie Jenkins and Abby Maiello each fired shots early, forcing Bulls goalkeeper Ainsley Wheldon to make two saves.
Buffalo would break up the scoreless tie in the 28th minute when Sopie Therien fired a shot beyond Junker's outstretched arms from nearly 25 yards out. The shot was just the third of the game for Buffalo. To that point, the Bonnies had outshot UB 6-2.
Alex Meador and Caitlin MacConnell would both fire on Wheldon multiple times before halftime but it was UB who would take the 1-0 lead into the break.
Buffalo came out firing in the second half and did not waste much time taking a 2-0 lead. Katie Roberts would secure the second score of the day in the 55th minute following an onslaught of shots from the Bulls offense.
Coach Steve Brdarski, making his coaching debut at McGraw-Jennings Field, immediately went to the bench in order to find a spark but Buffalo continued to pressure the St. Bonaventure defense. It wasn't until Brdarski restored the starters that the Bonnies Finally broke through the Buffalo wall.
In the 86th minute, Brittany Charles made a run deep into Buffalo territory and found Lauren Hill in the middle of the box who turned and fired a rocket towards the Bulls goalkeeper. The ball pushed through the arms of Wheldon and trickled across the line for the score. It was Hill's first goal of this young 2013 season.
The Bonnies would not however make any further push as UB was able to keep the ball away from its own end to secure the 2-1 victory in this one.
The Brown and White outshot Buffalo 14-12 in this one and will now have a week-long break before traveling to Annapolis, Md. for the U.S. Naval Academy Invitational. The first game of the event will pit the Bonnies against Towson on Friday (Sept. 6) at 3 p.m. St. Bonaventure will square off with Navy at noon on Sunday (Sept. 8).
