The Short Story:
The St. Bonaventure baseball team came into Sunday's game looking for their first Atlantic 10 series victory of the season but came up short against the George Mason Patriots by a score of 6-1. The Patriots' key of success throughout the game would be their strong hitting as they registered four doubles, including a double in the first inning that resulted in a run. George Mason led early in the ballgame with a three-run lead after two innings. The Bonnies finally pushed a run across in the top of the seventh. St. Bonaventure's two-run deficit did not last long as in the bottom of the eighth George Mason tacked on three more runs to increase their lead to five. The Brown and White ended the game with a total of 13 runners left on base.
How It Happened:
- After the Bonnies went down in order to begin the game, George Mason pounced on them quickly in the bottom of the first as Fernandez doubled down the left-field line to score Willis.
- Fernandez came around to score later in the in inning when Leemhuis hit a sac-fly to right field. The Patriots lead by two after one inning of play.
- In the next inning, George Mason notched another run by a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.
- The game calmed down through the third inning to the sixth as no runs would be scored.
- St. Bonaventure finally was able to tally a run in the top of the seventh as Joel Rosencrance helped his own cause by singling to right field that scored Thad Johnson from second.
- The Patriots went on to increase their lead to five when they scored three in bottom of the eighth off of single to left field, a passed ball and a sac-fly to center field.
- The Bonnies tried to get something going in the top of the ninth with runners on first and second with one out but the next two batters went down in order to close out the game.
Inside The Box Score:
- Starting Pitcher Joel Rosencrance had a shaky start to begin the game but settled in as he pitched six innings and gave up only three runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
- In relief for the Brown and White was Daniel Trimble, who entered in the seventh inning and finished the rest of the game and recorded one strikeout and allowed three hits.
- Only three batters for the Bonnies had more than one hit on the day. Among the three was Justin Brozick, who recorded the only extra-base hit for SBU.
- Tyler Bell and Brian Weightman both posted a stolen base on Sunday. They now have combined for a 22 stolen bases on the year with Bell having 13 and Weightman with nine.
On Deck:
The Bonnies return to the field on Tuesday, April 15 as they travel north to Buffalo, N.Y. to take on Little 3 rival Canisius in a make-up game from March 26 that was rained out. The Golden Griffins are currently 20-13 this season, but only 2-6 in the last eight games.
