Canisius hands @BonniesSoftball losses in both games of home doubleheader

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. ─ The St. Bonaventure softball team (4-22, 1-2 Atlantic 10) allowed 19 runs and 29 hits over the course of their doubleheader losses to the Canisius Golden Griffins (10-20, 1-3 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) by scores of 9-7 and 10-3 Wednesday afternoon (April 9) at the McGraw-Jennings Field softball diamond.

In the first game, the Bonnies took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a double by first baseman Katie Sinclair that brought designated player Desiree Gonzalez and second baseman Kiera Lorenzo home.

The Golden Griffins responded with seven unanswered runs. In the top of the second, catcher Bethany DeMarco singled, driving in designated player Lindsey Silfer. After second baseman Alexis Roman homered in the top of the third, shortstop Robin Kennery scored on a double by right fielder Michelle DelPrince. Later in the inning, Silfer and DelPrince reached home on a single by first baseman Valorie Nappo. DeMarco completed the five-run third inning outburst with a single that brought Valorie Nappo home. Canisius tacked on another run in the top of the fourth when Roman scored on a DelPrince single.

The Brown and White scored twice in the bottom of the fifth when shortstop Emily McDonough reached home on a sacrifice fly to center field by left fielder Emily Belfield and on a Sinclair single that drove in Gonzalez.

Canisius answered with two runs in the top of the sixth on a Silfer double that scored Roman and on a Valorie Nappo single that allowed Silfer to come home.

St. Bonaventure scored three times in bottom of the sixth when Snider scored on an error by Canisius third baseman Meghan Cuda, on a Belfield single that drove in right fielder Kelly Farrell and when McDonough advanced to home on a Gonzalez out at first. However, the Bonnies failed to complete the comeback effort in the bottom of the seventh.

Silfer earned a hit in all three of her at bats in the contest. Sinclair recorded two hits in the game for the Brown and White.

St. Bonaventure starting pitcher Kristen Hickling struck out a batter and allowed three walks, seven earned runs and 10 hits in three and two-thirds innings of work. Carly Bilchak recorded a strikeout and allowed two earned runs, three walks and three hits in three and one-third innings of relief. Canisius starter Jen Consaul tossed a complete game, recording a strikeout and giving up five walks, seven runs (six earned) and seven hits.

The Golden Griffins jumped on the Bonnies with three runs in each of the second contest's first two innings. In the top of first, a Silfer home run to center field brought center fielder Jessica Berzins home and DelPrince scored on a wild pitch thrown by St. Bonaventure starting pitcher Alexis Sloat. In the top of the second, Cuda homered, bringing left fielder Tori Nappo home and Kennery singled, driving in Berzins. Canisius made the score 7-0 in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by left fielder Tori Nappo that allowed DelPrince to score.

St. Bonaventure scored twice in the bottom of the third. Belfield hit a sacrifice fly to right field that brought catcher Lauren Waite home and McDonough scored after Gonzalez reached first on a fielder's choice.

The teams each scored a run in the fifth inning. In the top of the inning, Silfer reached home on a passed ball thrown by Bilchak. In the bottom of the fifth, left fielder Katherine Caboot scored after Sinclair singled and advanced to second on an error by Tori Nappo.

The Golden Griffins capped off the scoring in the top of the sixth with Cuda reaching home on a Berzins double and Berzins advancing home on a Bilchak wild pitch.

Berzins recorded three hits in the game for Canisius. McDonough and Waite each had two-hit performances at the plate for the Brown and White.

Sloat struck out a batter and allowed seven earned runs and eight hits in two innings of work on the mound for the Bonnies. Bilchak allowed three earned runs and eight hits with two strikeouts in five innings of relief.

Consaul pitched her second complete game of the day for the Golden Griffins, allowing three walks, three earned runs and eight hits and striking out four batters in the contest.

The Bonnies are scheduled to welcome two A-10 rivals this weekend when they host Massachusetts at 3 p.m. Friday (April 11) and at noon Saturday (April 12) and George Washington in a doubleheader on Sunday (April 13) beginning at noon.
