The Short Story:
The St. Bonaventure baseball team finished up its three-game series against Rhode Island on Sunday, May 4, with a loss to the Rams by the score of 7-2. The Rams were helped by their starting pitcher, Steve Moyers, who threw for eight innings and only allowed six hits, while striking out seven SBU batters.

The ballgame moved along quickly in the first three innings as there would only be three hits tallied. In the fourth inning, Rhode Island broke the scoreless tie with a single to center field. The game remained close until the top of the sixth, when the Rams received help from the wind, which carried a deep-fly ball out of the park for three-runs. The Bonnies tried to chip away at the lead, but in the seventh they squandered two more runs. Each team went on to score one more run apiece as Rhode Island earned the five-run victory.

Steve Moyers (2-5) registered the win for the Rams, while Drew Teller (2-5) posted the loss. Teller faced 29 batters and suffered six earned runs on the day and gave up a homerun in the sixth.

How It Happened:

  • The Rhode Island center-fielder, Mike Sherburne, began his stellar day in the fourth when he singled to center fielder that scored Pat Quinn from second.
  • The game remained 1-0 until the top of the sixth inning when Sherburne connected on a pitch and knocked it over the left-field fence with two men on base.
  • SBU got into the act in the bottom of the sixth as the Bonnies had runners on second and third with one out. Bradley Gresock grounded out to the shortstop and pushed in Dylan Dunn from third. After six the Bonnies trailed by three-runs.
  • In the top of the seventh, Shane O'Connell of the Rams tripled to right center, which allowed R.J. Warnock to score. In the next at-bat, Mike Corin hit a sac-fly to center field to score O'Connell from third.
  • St. Bonaventure got on the board in the bottom of the seventh off an error from the shortstop. After a deep triple from Tyler Bell, Jonathan Diaz lined out to the shortstop, but the shortstop tried to throw out Bell at third, who was leaning off but overthrew the ball and let Bell to score.
  • Rhody tacked on an extra run in the top of the eighth from a triple to left center that scored Sherburne.

Inside The Box Score:

  • Starting Pitcher, Drew Teller, completed 6.1 innings pitched and allowed six runs on nine hits, while striking out two Rams. Prior to the sixth inning, Teller only gave up one run on four hits.
  • Tyler Bell is the lone SBU player to record more than one hit in today's game. Among his two hits was a deep triple to center field. Bell now has a team-high four triples on the season and is batting .283 with 21 RBI.
  • Tommy Styn picked up his seventh stolen base on the year in the bottom of the fifth. He has yet to be thrown out on the base path.
