The Short Story:
The St. Bonaventure baseball team earned its second series win of the season on Monday, March 9 as the Bonnies defeated the Lehigh Mountain Hawks in game two of a three-game series by a score of 12-2. The Bonnies were powered by a six-run inning in the third and then followed up with a three-run inning in the fourth to help them earn their 10-run victory.

Leading the Brown and White at the plate on Monday was senior Tyler Bell and junior Thad Johnson. Both, Bell and Johnson had three hits, while Bell had three RBIs and Johnson had two.

Junior pitcher Connor Grey picked up his first win of the season on Monday. Grey went 7.2 innings, while registering six strikeouts and allowing four hits and two runs. In relief for Grey was Ben Contento, who saw his first collegiate action. Contento threw 1.1 innings and recorded two strikeouts.

Nick Stephens of Lehigh got the loss after two innings pitched and allowing eight runs, but only four earned.

How It Happened:

  • Another Day, another St. Bonaventure score in the first inning. The Bonnies notched two runs in the bottom of the first. Tyler Bell recorded the first RBI as he singled that scored Cole Peterson from third. In the next at bat with the bases loaded, freshman Aaron Phillips reached on a fielder's choice, which scored Thad Johnson from third.
  • Lehigh got a run back in the top half of the third off a Mike Garzillo single that scored Patrick Walshe.
  • St. Bonaventure had an offensive outburst in the third as it would score six runs in the bottom part of the inning. Bell got things started again when he doubled that scored Johnson and Ted Dilts. It would be a series of errors against the Mountain Hawks to allow the Bonnies score three of its next four runs. Aaron Phillips, Jonathan Diaz and Cole Peterson would all reach base on errors, which also allowed a member of the Bonnies to score. Jared Baldinelli recorded a sac-fly to left field that scored Phillips from third in the inning too.
  • In the next inning, St. Bonaventure added three more runs. Danny Urban knocked in Bell and advanced Phillips to second on a single. Lehigh again would have trouble in the field as it recorded two more errors that resulted in two Bonnies' runs.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Thad Johnson singled that brought in Baldinelli to score.
  • Jacen Nalesnik of Lehigh doubled in the eighth to score Tim McKay. McKay's run would be unearned as he reached base on a throwing error.
