The Short Story:
The St. Bonaventure baseball team was downed by the surging VCU Rams on Thursday, May 14, by a score of 12-2.
One of the few bright spots on the day for the Bonnies was junior third baseman Thad Johnson, who recorded two hits, including a deep homerun to left field. Johnson currently sits at 65 hits on the year, which puts him tied for eighth all-time in a single season with his former teammate Jason Radwan.
Earning the loss for the Brown and White was Connor Grey. Grey went five innings and allowed 11 runs on 13 hits. Grey registered three strikeouts in the setback.
The starting pitcher for VCU, JoJo Howie tossed a complete game and allowed just two runs on eight hits. Howie notched seven strikeouts in the victory.
How It Happened:
- The Rams opened up the game in the top of the second inning with a Logan Farrar single up the middle that drove in Jimmy Kerrigan and Darian Carpenter.
- With one swing of the bat in the fifth inning the Bonnies were trailing 6-0. Matt Davis knocked a grand slam to left field that scored Daane Berezo, Walker Haymaker and Farrar.
- In the top of the sixth, VCU put six more runs on the board from four singles and one double.
- St. Bonaventure finally got a run on the board in the bottom of the sixth with an Aaron Phillips single to right center to score Dylan Dunn from second.
- Junior Thad Johnson registered his third homerun of the season with a deep shot to left field.
