The Short Story:
St. Bonaventure scored three unanswered goals to erase a 2-0 deficit and defeat the Cleveland State, 3-2, Sunday afternoon on the second day of the SBU Alumni Classic.
Cleveland State struck first as Allie Sieradzki went on the break and beat Bona keeper Christina Sarokon with a low shot at the 20:37 mark.
The Bonnies failed to convert on a header opportunity in the final minute of the half and Cleveland State took the 1-0 lead into the break.
The Vikings extended their lead early in the second half. In the 53rd minute, Sieradzki finished a header off a corner kick from the right side for her second goal of the game.
After mounting little offense to that point, the Bonnies put one on the board in the 69th minute as freshman forward Jessica Scruggs cut and received a pass inside the box. Scruggs sent a crossing pass on the ground to senior Abby Maiello, who re-directed it in the net.
Just 36 second later, Scruggs again received a looping thru pass from sophomore Danielle Vis and went on the break, but this time took a shot herself and beat keeper Jamie Daniels to tie the game at 2-2.
At the 76:24 mark, Vis put the Bonnies ahead as she fired a shot off the left post that gave the Bonnies a 3-2 lead. Marley Jarvis assisted the goal as she sprung Vis with a long pass through the middle of the Vikings' defense.
In the closing seconds of the game, Sarokon put an end to a last-minute Cleveland State run with a save to seal the St. Bonaventure win.
The Bonnies finished 1-1 in the SBU Alumni Classic. Cornell won the Classic title with a 2-0 mark while Akron went 1-1 and Cleveland State finished 0-2.
Coach's Corner:
"We changed things up [in the last 25 minutes]. We put players in different positions and subbed in some different players," said Bonnies' head coach Steve Brdarski. "We got a ton of freshman from one of our freshmen, Jessica Scruggs, who came in there and contributed right away."
"The thing I love about Jessica is that she had an opportunity to put one away in the last game, but she didn't. And that's the sign of a good forward. To have that amnesia and know you're going to come back on the field and get your chances to put them away. That shows greatness."
"That third goal, Dani [Vis] does so much for us – work ethic wise --, and that's a cracker of a goal. We should check the post for a dent."
On the Alumni Classic: "For us, it was nice being able to say thank you to our alumni. They do so much for our program."
