Late Push Comes Up Just Short In @BonniesWSoccer 2-1 Setback vs. Canisius

Box Score

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. -  A pair of second half goals were enough for Canisius to score a 2-1 victory over the St. Bonaventure women's soccer team on Friday night at the Marra Athletics Fields Complex.

After a scoreless first half, the Golden Griffs (2-3-0) broke through in the 56th minute when freshman Gretta Dry found the back of the net. The scoring play started on a free kick from Tayler Kugler on the far sideline, sending a pass to Maddie Good who found Dry for the tally.

Canisius punched in some insurance in the 65th minute when Dry assisted Emily Czechowski at point blank range for a 2-0 lead.

Bona got on the board in the 82nd minute on a Canisius own goal. Mary Tona put a shot on net that was stopped, but seconds later a Canisius player inadvertently kicked the ball into her own net to cut the lead in half. Unfortunately for the hosts, it would be as close as they could get, despite controlling the pace of play in the final minutes.

The Bonnies (0-2-1) nearly scored multiple goals in the early going. Just over a minute in, Bona designed a strong scoring opportunity off a set piece following a free kick. Senior Jennifer Morris found Danielle Vis to the left of the goal and the junior captain jockeyed through a crowd in front of the net, delivering a pass to Bella Marra. The freshman momentarily had a look at an open net, but the shot attempt twisted wide.

In the fifth minute, Vis again played a great ball into the center of the box, but another shot attempt went awry.

In the 31st minute, a Bonnies corner kick from Vis led to another chance when Vis worked through defenders in the box, shooting just wide. In the second half, another Bonnies corner in the 72nd minute led to a header from freshman Maddie Mason that sailed over the net.

Freshman Lauren Malcolm made four saves for the Bonnies while fellow freshman Alana Rossi stopped three shots to earn the win for Canisius. The two sides finished with 11 shots apiece on the evening.

St. Bonaventure will have a quick turnaround, taking on Niagara on home turf Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
