@BonniesSoftball Wraps Up Green and Gold Classic with Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The St. Bonaventure University softball team swept its two games against Cleveland State and Jacksonville in its final contests in the Green and Gold Classic.

The two Bona starting pitchers shined in the circle, as Rylee Hehir and Josie Borysevicz both earned complete-game wins. For the freshman Hehir, the win in game one was the first of her career.

Against Cleveland State, Alexandra Piergustavo delivered a three-run home run for her second of the season.

Alissa Karjel came through with a seventh inning, go-ahead RBI double in game two that broke a scoreless tie.

Game one: St. Bonaventure 6, Cleveland State 1 |

The Bonnies started strong out of the gate as they took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Desiree Gonzalez led off the game with a walk, and later scored on a throwing error put in play by Emma Borysevicz.

Despite a 30-minute lightning delay mid way through the first, freshman Rylee Hehir held strong in a pitchers' duel early on she held the Bonnies' 1-0 lead into the fifth.

St. Bonaventure broke the game open with five runs in the top of the fifth. Gonzalez and Elizabeth Enovitch reached base to start the inning, and Piergustavo brought everyone home as she hammered a three-run home run to put Bona up, 4-0.

SBU later got two more that inning as Kiera Lorenzo reached on an error that brought home Alissa Karjel and Emma Borysevicz.

Hehir settled into a groove and retired eight in a row from the fourth inning through the sixth to hold Cleveland State scoreless.

CSU eventually plated one in the seventh, but the freshman would hold on to secure the 6-1 St. Bonaventure win.

In doing so, Hehir, earned her first career win and her first seven-inning complete game with four strikeouts while surrendering  just three hits and one walk.

Piergustavo's homer served as one of four Bona hits. Enovitch, Morgan Phillips and Karjel made up the other three with one apiece.

Gonzalez scored two runs and swiped two bases in the win.

Game two: St. Bonaventure 3, Jacksonville 2 |

Josie Borysevicz started in the circle for the team's final game in the state of Florida, and she put the Bonnies in position to earn the sweep.

The junior put up six scoreless innings, and retired eight in a row from the end of the first through the third inning.

Jacksonville managed its first scoring threat in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of singles to lead off the inning. But, with a strikeout and two fly outs, Josie Borysevicz left the two runners stranded and took the scoreless tie into the final frame.

Enovitch led off the inning with a single for the Bonnies' first hit of the game. Piergustavo then managed  a single of her own, putting runners on second and first with no outs.

St. Bonaventure took advantage of its opportunity as Karjel sent home the go-ahead run with a double to left field.

Brooke Kane-Walker later worked an infield single that brought home Nicole Antonacci, giving the Brown and White a 2-0 lead.

SBU got its third run of the frame as Lorenzo brought home Karjel on a fielder's choice to send the Bonnies into the final half-inning up, 3-0.

A pair of hits and a walk suddenly gave Jacksonville its first two runs of the game. But, with two runners on and two outs, Josie Borysevicz induced a fly out to escape with the lead and secure the St. Bonaventure win.

With the victory, Josie Borysevicz moved to 4-4 on the season while earning her third complete-game win.

The entirety of the Bona offense came in the seventh inning. Enovitch, Piergustavo, Karjel and Kane-Walker made up the four St. Bonaventure hits.

Kane-Walker earned her first career hit and RBI.

Up next, the Bonnies will head to Wilmington, N.C. for five games against Georgetown, UMass-Lowell and host UNC Wilmington from March 17-19.
