Pitchers Strong in @BonniesSoftball Doubleheader Losses

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The St. Bonaventure University softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Youngstown State Thursday afternoon.

Freshman Sam Wood delivered four scoreless innings in her relief appearance in game one, while Josie Borysevicz tossed all six innings in game two, surrendering one run.

Game one: Youngstown State 5, St. Bonaventure 0 |

Three runs in the first and a pair in the second from Youngstown State was all it would need as the Bonnies trailed early.

St. Bonaventure mounted its first threat in the fifth made up by a pair of Bona milestones. With her first career hit, McKenna Holtz singled to center, and moved up on a hit from Nicole Antonacci – her first of the season. But, the pair were left on base and St. Bonaventure was held scoreless.

The Bonnies failed to mount an offensive attack the rest of the way, and the 5-0 score held up.

Alexandra Piergustavo earned the third Bona hit of the day with a first-inning single, extending her hit streak to four games.

Freshman Rylee Hehir made the start for the Bonnies in the circle before being relieved by her classmate, Sam Wood. Wood tossed the final four innings with a strikeout and retired the final 10 batters she faced amassing 11 straight outs, starting with an inning-ending double play in the third.

Game two: Youngstown State 1, St. Bonaventure 0 |

The second part of the day's doubleheader saw Josie Borysevicz and Paige Geanangel of YSU battle in a pitchers' duel as the two pitchers both went the distance for their teams.

Both hurlers put up scoreless innings in the first and second before YSU plated the lone run of the game in the bottom of the third as a leadoff single eventually came in to score.

St. Bonaventure responded with its largest threat of the game in the top of the fourth. To lead off the inning, Desiree Gonzalez was hit by a pitch, and then stole second base to put herself in scoring position with no outs. But, two pop outs and a groundout left her stranded.

Borysevicz surrendered just one hit in her final three innings of work to hold the 1-0 YSU lead into the final frame.

Representing the tying run, Piergustavo worked a one-out single in the top of the seventh for the first Bona hit of the afternoon. Ultimately, though, the run was left stranded and the 1-0 YSU lead held up.

With the hit, Piergustavo has now hit safely in five straight games.

Josie Borysevicz earned her sixth complete game of the season with her performance, and today's game marks her third appearance of the season surrendering one earned run or fewer, as today's lone YSU run went unearned.

Up next, the Bonnies will head to UMass to open up Atlantic 10 play with a three-game set, first a doubleheader on Saturday and game three on Sunday.
