Box Score 2 CLEARWATER, Fla. – The St. Bonaventure University softball team split both games at the USF Invite, claiming a win in their second game of the afternoon in a pitcher's duel, 1-0, after falling to Central Michigan, 4-3, in the morning's action.
In the Bona win, Josie Borysevicz pitched a gem in the circle. The junior tossed all seven innings while striking out four and allowing just two hits and no walks to earn her second win of the season.
Kiera Lorenzo also worked three hits on the day, including two in the win.
In game one, Desiree Gonzalez and Alexandra Piergustavo both hit their first home runs of the season.
Game 1: Central Michigan 4, St. Bonaventure 3 |Â
The Bonnies fell behind early in the bottom of the first as the Chippewas plated three. Rylee Hehir escaped the early jam with a strike out.
Desiree Gonzalez helped the Bonnies keep pace as she delivered a big fly that brought home Kelly Farrell to bring the score to 3-2 in favor of CMU.
Two batters later Alexandra Piergustavo hammered her first career home run to dead center, evening the game at three.
But, Central Michigan responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the third to take the lead, 4-3.
Hehir then found her groove in the circle, retiring 12 of the next 13 batters.
Down one in the top of the seventh, the Bonnies mounted a rally in hopes of tying the score. With one out, Farrell reached on an error, and then Gonzalez sent a single through the right side putting runners on first and second. But the threat would end there as the next two Bonnies were sent down.
Hehir threw all six innings for the Bonnies, striking out five while allowing seven hits and three earned runs.
Gonzalez had two RBIs on two hits with Lorenzo, Phillips, Piergustavo and Farrell all collecting a hit apiece.
Game 2: St. Bonaventure 1, Fort Wayne 0 |Â
The Bonnies grabbed the lone run of the game in the bottom of the first. Desiree Gonzalez led off with a single, and moved up on an Elizabeth Enovitch walk. Then, the Bonnies were able to get Gonzalez across as Fort Wayne made a throwing error on a ball put in play by Morgan Phillips.
The one run was all the Bonnies would need as Borysevicz was solid in the circle.
The junior was perfect through three before giving up just one of her two hits in the fourth inning.
Fort Wayne's lone threat of the game came on a sixth inning, two-out double from Sydney Windlan. The Bona defense was able to escape unscathed as Windlan was tossed out at third on the play for the final out of the inning.
The Bonnies then mounted a rally in the bottom of the sixth to look for an insurance run as Phillips led off the frame with a single. Emma Borysevicz later singled to right, but Brittany Fair was thrown out at home for the third out of the inning.
A 1-2-3 seventh inning secured the win for the Bonnies with one of those outs coming as a Borysevicz strikeout.
Lorenzo earned two of the five Bona hits. Gonzalez, Phillips and Emma Borysevicz claimed the other three with one apiece.
Win the win, Josie Borysevicz is 2-2 on the season, both of her wins coming in complete game fashion.
The Bonnies will complete action in the USF Invite Sunday morning as they take on Ball State at 9:00 a.m. as St. Bonaventure looks to end the invite 3-2.Â
