Baseball Comes Up Short in Saturday Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BRONX, N.Y. – Fordham took both halves of a Saturday Atlantic 10 baseball doubleheader from St. Bonaventure, 3-0 in game one before a 7-5 decision in the nightcap.

GAME 1 – Fordham 3, St. Bonaventure 0 F/7 inn. | Box Score (PDF)
The early game was a classic pitcher's duel as the two teams remained scoreless without much of any scoring opportunities through the first six innings.

Fordham's Matt Mikulski lived up to his billing as one of the A-10's top pitchers as he lowered his season ERA well under 1.0 by striking out 16 batters and allowing just one hit in a complete-game effort.

For much of the day, Bonnies starter Elijah Baez matched him on the scoreboard, keeping the Rams quiet into the sixth.

Fordham (14-7, 2-1 A-10) would open the game up with one out in the sixth, though, as a Zach Selinger single through the right side scored what would be the winning run. Nick LaBella followed with a single to plate two more.

Baez was tagged with a tough-luck loss after working six innings, surrendering just two earned runs on six hits while striking out three and walking one. Branden Myers had the Bonnies only hit against Mikulski.

GAME 2 – Fordham 7, St. Bonaventure 5 | Box Score (PDF)
St. Bonaventure (2-11, 1-3) got on the board with two in the first thanks to a single from Matthew Williams to plate the game's first run before another RBI single courtesy of Garrett Boldt.

Fordham would answer with two in the home half of the inning and two more in the second and another tally in the third for a 5-2 advantage.

Down 6-2 in the seventh, the Bonnies made things interesting with an RBI single from Brendyn Stillman for a 6-3 score before scoring twice more in the eighth to pull within two after three hits set the stage for a pair of runs to come in on two wild pitches.

In the ninth, the Bonnies threatened as they twice sent the tying run to the plate before the Rams bullpen shut the door.

Stillman collected three hits for the Bonnies while Williams got on base four times after picking up two hits and walking twice.

Luke Lashutka struck out four in 2.2 innings of relief.

St. Bonaventure returns home to play another four-game conference series against Saint Joseph's at Handler Park Friday through Sunday.
