HOUGHTON, N.Y. – For the first time in two years, the St. Bonaventure track teams competed in an indoor meet, running at the Houghton Highlander Invitational Saturday afternoon.
St. Bonaventure began official indoor competition for the first time in decades during the 2020 spring season, but that campaign was cut short after just three meets due to the pandemic. Last year, the team went back to an outdoor-only schedule as the pandemic continued, but this year is building to its first-ever appearance at the Atlantic 10 indoor championships next month.
Bona's knocked off the rust just after returning to campus last week in their return to indoor action by going back to the site of their first indoor meet two years ago, the Kerr-Pegula Fieldhouse on the campus of Houghton College.
Darion Gregory placed 10
th in the 800-meter run with the second-fastest time in the program record book, clocking in at 2:09.22. He finished just ahead of teammate
Elias Kott, who owns the top time from 2020 at 2:05.25, and ran a mark of 2:10.11 on Saturday.
Wyatt Hulsey (2:10.20) and
John Pullano (2:12.20) were also close behind.
Zane Courtwright showed the way in the mile, crossing the finish line in 4:44.68 for an eighth-place finish overall out of over 30 competitors. Gregory placed 12
th at 4:46.45 and Pullano was on his teammate's heels at 4:48.13.
In the 3000 meters,
Colin McCarthy ran what will be the second-fastest mark in the young program record book at 9:36.91.
Zach Buckner finished in 9:41.09 and
Jacob Osswald returned from injury with a run of 9:43.48.
The 4x800-meter relay team competed together for the first time and placed second as the team of Buckner, Courtwright, Gregory and
Nathan Prisella posted a time of 8:48.79, trailing only the winning time of 8:23.05 turned in by Canisius.
St. Bonaventure returns to action Friday, Feb. 11 in Rochester at the RIT meet.
